Parents Arrested After Their 5-year-old Son Is Found Alone In Bronx Apartment Filled With Maggots, Rats, And Feces

It’s amazing sometimes how some parents take the raising of their children with such levity and simple-mindedness.

Being a parent is a full-time job but apparently, these parents from the Bronx in New York City didn’t get the memo.

Wilfred Lewis and his wife Charlotte Lewis have been arrested by the police after leaving their child in deplorable living conditions.

Their son was just five-years-old and had not seen either of his parents for about a day when he was found by a FedEx worker.

The FedEx Worker had come to deliver a package to the Kingsbridge apartment when the door was answered by a five-year-old.

The name of the young child has been kept private for security reasons since he is a juvenile.

The discovery took place this past Friday morning at around 11 O’clock in the morning.

The FedEx worker asked the little boy for the whereabouts of his parents as he had a delivery to make.

The little boy did not know and reportedly answered ‘They’re not home’.

Alarmed that parents would leave such a young child home alone to care for himself, the FedEx worker left to seek out help.

He attracted the attention of a police officer who then followed him back to the building in the Bronx.

According to the New York Post, the sight that welcomed the policeman after he broke down the door was highly nauseating.

The apartment was infested with maggots, bed bugs and rats.

According to reports, the child was all alone and even the walls of the apartment were smeared with feces.

Obviously, the home had been left without care for quite a while.

The little boy also told police that he had not seen his parents for about a day.

Worsening the situation was the fact that there was no food in the refrigerator.

The implication of this is that the five-year-old would most likely have starved to death without the intervention of the delivery worker.

His parents Wilfred Lewis, 59, and Charlotte Lewis, 48, have since been arrested by the police following the discovery.

In addition to the abandoned five-year-old, the couple reportedly have three kids.

A 12-year-old girl, a 13-year-old girl and a 15-year-old boy; all of whom were not home either.

Even more sickening is the fact that the children’s mother is supposed to be a caregiver and full of empathy as she is a nurse.

Charlotte was arrested at Montefiore Medical Center, where she works.

Her husband Wilfred, on the other hand, is a Metropolitan Transportation Authority technology trainer.

The fifty-nine-year-old reportedly told police that his son was self-sufficient and was home sick from school.

Nevertheless, the couple have both been charged with failing to exercise control of a minor.

The boy’s father is also being charged with child endangerment.

All of the children were taken to Montefiore Hospital to be treated for reasons unclear at this time.

They are all currently with the Administration for Children’s Services, which has had previous contact with the family.

ACS’ Deputy Commissioner for External Affairs Eric Ferrero said to the media,

‘Our top priority is protecting the safety and well-being of all children in New York City.

‘We are working with the NYPD to investigate this incident, and the safety of all of the other children who were in this home has been secured.’
