Over the past few months, Hollywood has really been coming down hard on issues of sexual abuse and harassment.
The hammer came down on embattled film producer Harvey Weinstein in September last year when several actresses spoke out against him.
Many other female entertainment figures have opened up about their own experiences with sexual harassment and abuse.
In fact, the seventy-fifth edition of the Golden Globe awards that held this past January was overshadowed by the Time’s Up campaign.
The campaign was held in support of the movement against sexual abuse and participants were dressed in black.
In keeping with the movement, popular actress Rosario Dawson has revealed that she was molested sexually as a kid.
Rosario Dawson has always been vocal in her support of the Time’s Up campaign.
Now it looks like there’s a reason for that.
Although Rosario’s abuse didn’t come at the hands of a rogue director or movie producer.
It came at the sick sadistic hands of a family member.
The thirty-eight-year-old actress did refuse to reveal the identity of her alleged abuser.
Rosario Dawson opened up about her rape and sexual abuse while speaking on the Morado Lens podcast.
Speaking with hosts Cindy Rodriguez and Nathalie Farfan, she ripped open the band-aid on a very old wound.
Rosario was born into poverty in New York City.
Her mother is a Puerto Rican-Cuban worker named Isabel Celeste while her father was named Patrick C. Harris.
Her mother was just sixteen when she birthed Rosario Dawson and her father left the family a few years after her birth.
‘I was raped and molested as a child, so for me, the world was like that since I was a child. By a family member,’ she said.
The actress revealed that the horrifying experience shaped her life and her view of the world.
She explained that she accepted sexual abuse as a norm and wasn’t even surprised when she saw it in Hollywood.
‘When I saw it in the workplace, it wasn’t foreign to me. It was like, well, that even happens within the family. It happens with people that are supposed to take care of you when you’re a child.’
Rosario’s childhood was chaotic so it isn’t quite easy to guess when the abuse occurred.
When Rosario was a year old her mother married construction worker Greg Dawson who ‘loved and raised the actress as his own daughter’.
When she turned five, the family moved into an apartment the actress has previously described as ‘a railroad apartment run by a slumlord’.
Her big break did come when she was fifteen.
She was discovered by director Larry Clark who was on the hunt for children to act in his gritty urban movie Kids.
While speaking on the podcast, Dawson also touched on the movement against sexual abuse currently sweeping the country.
‘Now we’re in a place where it’s finally like, ‘No, we don’t have to keep passing this on. This is archaic and terrible and destructive. Let’s look at it’
‘It’s beautiful. I’m so ready for this moment’.
This revelation comes after Dawson revealed she wanted to ‘celebrate’ those who have spoken out about sexual misconduct.
The actress mentioned this at the Golden Globe Awards show which she was present for dressed in black.
